I've been listening to The Sleepwalkers, which is about the European history leading to the WW1 during my commutes. Ethnocentrism and nationalism from many, many nations played into the conditions that sprang the world into war. Unfortunately, this may still be a primary driver of war. Sprinkle in some religious dominion and the nukes you mentioned and it doesn't look pretty.
